Emma Nicholson Sheldrake

An experienced counsellor, registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Emma holds a Post Graduate Diploma Counselling & Psychotherapy from the University of South Wales.
Emma has worked in education and mental health for over twenty years and has a deep commitment to supporting others to live well.
Emma works integratively, this allows the therapist to tailor the approach to fit the client and the specific presenting issues. Emma’s post graduate training and continued professional development allows her in-depth understanding of modalities of their approach. The main values that make up Emma’s therapeutic approach are:

  • Client centred: Non judgemental and respectful. You are the expert of your life
  • Relational: A safe space where you are encouraged to give feedback about how you feel about our our work and how is progressing. Once a working relationship is established, exploring how important early relationships shape who and how we are.
  • Meaningful: Exploring how we live and the meanings we find in birth, death and everything in-between.
  • Cherishing diversity: Intersectional understanding and a recognition of how difference, privilege and marginalisation affects daily life and the counselling relationship.
  • An educated and respectful approach to neurodiversity and how neurological diversity such as autism, dyslexia and ADHD might be expressed in counselling.
  • Psychoeducation: Depending on your what’s important to you, the client, Emma is happy to discuss the ‘what where when and how’ of her approach. Sharing relevant information and self care skills, for to use as you go forward in your life.
  • Creative: Our minds wander, race and dream. We visualise our favourite foods and our mouths water, just thinking about an upcoming interview can make our hearts beat faster. Imagination plays a huge roll in all of our daily lives. Utilising this resource in therapy, in the way that feels most comfortable for you, is a key aspect of Emma’s approach to therapy.
  • Trauma informed: Working safely is my first priority. I am well informed in how we can be affected by trauma and my approach to helping process trauma is; slow, safe and steady.
